Chelsea Wolfe @ The Loft

  As I sample different recordings of Chelsea Wolfe on Youtube, Last Fm, Spotify it occurs to me that you could casually listen to her stuff and be "on the fence" about whether "she can sing." Well let me assure you Chelsea Wolfe's voice is amazing.  She's got a great thing going: outre stylistic markings (End of Time Literature! David Lynch! Soviet Russia! and paired it with an accessible folky sound and a convincing image.  I came into the show basically ignorant of the charm and left a convert- even though I  do not spend a whole hell of a lot of time listening to folk derived indie music.  Something about the "doom" part really sold it to me. I guess that's just something I'm into.

  There was some discussion at the show about a potential late summer tour pairing Chelsea Wolfe and Dirty Beaches- which in my mind would be somewhat akin to the Dirty Beaches/Xiu Xiu tour that happened last year- that was a fun tour!  I bet Chelsea Wolfe/Dirty Beaches would be fun, too.

 One thing I didn't like was the venue: Specifically the bartender who frothed three lattes DURING Chelsea's headlining set.  I watched someone confront the behind the bar staff about it being disrespectful and the bartender treated the PAYING CUSTOMER like he/she was insane to complain.

   Um no- you who work the bar at the Loft during the Chelsea Wolfe show are morons who obviously haven't been properly trained, otherwise you wouldn't be frothing a god damn latte during a headlining set at your venue.  You know what? Next time- just tell the asshole ordering 3 lattes at a concert venue at 11 PM to fucking wait for their precious late night latte.

 Oh also the Zanzibar Cafe downtown (the bar at the Loft venue at UCSD is called "Zanzibar at The Loft" and is run by the same people.) Has had rats- more then once. Fact.  If you go here you can see the reinspections that they had to do after the Health Department found rats at their restaurant.  So that's the kind of people you are dealing with.

  The Loft in general just kind of sux- wouldn't recommend it for a show.

Dirty Beaches Drifters/Love Is The Devil

       Heeeyyyy so the new Dirty Beaches Double LP Drifters/Love Is The Devil has entered the Revolver Weekly Top Seller Chart where it sits at #14 as I write this.  That is FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS before the release date.  If you look at the other records on that list there isn't a single one that is being released AFTER February 5th, let alone four and a half months from now.

   One fact that an Artist and their Audience agree upon is the identity of the resulting Art work.  The classic exposition of this principle is the hoary old story about Marcel Duchamp displaying a toilet at an art exhibit in New York City in 1917 and having it disqualified by the Judges, but of course, everyone agreed that the toilet was Art, just disagreed on whether it was "good" Art, which is another question entirely.

  The agreement between Artist and Audience over the identity of the art work is a given, but nothing about the identity of the Artist is fixed in the same way.  The solid feeling critics have at being able to point at an Album, Painting, Sculpture, Building etc. and saying "that is the Art Work." Is only matched by the vaporous fumes that the same critics sniff when trying to explain "that is the Artist."  One is a concrete, almost physical description, the other is the most ephemeral of all critical judgments.

  A good way to illustrate what I'm talking about is the work and identity of Andy Warhol. Warhol was a prolific studio Artist who made drawings, paintings, prints, silk screens, film, music and sculpture   Even though Warhol was a prolific Artist in terms of works, he was even more prolific in terms of establishing and expanding his Artistic identity.  With Warhol, this is an easy concept to grasp because one of the characteristics of his Artistic identity was as an apostle of fame and celebrity.  This concern is also present of much of Warhol's work itself, but it extended off the canvas, so to speak.

  The point I'm trying to make here is that an Artist can create many different kinds of works and have a separate identity as an Artist, independent from any one work.  Something that often happens in the more popular Artistic fields is that an Artist becomes tied to one specific work, and that work dwarves the independent identity. Think of Fall Out Boy for a contemporary example of that phenomenon.

Haunted Hearts 7" Up To #1 Slot In Weekly Top Sellers At Revolver

  The new Haunted Hearts 7", which hits stores tomorrow, is up to the #1 slot in Revolver's Weekly Top Seller Chart.  Compare that to the new BNM dubbed Grouper record- which is currently sitting at #4 on the same chart.  Haunted Hearts 7" has also advanced to the top 10 on the Top Monthly Sellers Chart and #27 on the Top Three Month Sellers Chart.

  Another comparison to make is to the Night Marchers record that came out in January: #6 Weekly Chart; #2 on the Monthly Chart and #5 on the Three Month Chart.

   It's worth pointing out this position was reached organically- the only blog/press post on this record was a Pitchfork post from December 2nd of last year.  I'm just saying this isn't a record that is blowing up on the internet, rather it is being ordered by record stores to sell in their shops to customers.  That's something besides relying on blogs to blow up your Artist overnight.
